Eric Kayser

There is nothing else in the world such as French dessert. I was lucky today to get such wonderful treats, but warning, it does not get cheap, so you should come when your wallet is fatter than usual. Featured is strawberry tart, apricot tart, and cardinal. Cardinal had a smooth ricotta center that practically slides into your mouth. Also featured are petite desserts, one bite and you are finished but they are packed with flavor. Featured is mini yuzu tart, mini praline and pistacho tart, and mini dark chocolate tart. All of this came to a grand total of $20+ but it is worth to treat yourself once in a while.

Mugi Bakery

Mugi Bakery is located in Flushing, right off the Q25, Q34 bus stop. It is a nice place to sit in if you can find a available seat and occassionally has a quiet atmosphere depending on the timing you come in. They have cookies, bread, cakes, and drinks. I would not recommend their individual bread because they tend to be bland, but their Christmas bread (available all year) is good. It is a ring of bread filled with sweets and raisins. I would not recommend their cakes either, but their mousse is something you should try; they have a variety of flavors: chocolate and mango, but I recommend the more exotic ones such as coconut (featured here), blueberry, and papaya.

Their address is here: 4365 Kissena Blvd, Flushing, NY 11355

Royal Queen

Dim Sum is a fading tradition nowadays, and the quality of several places that offer it have been decreasing for the last ten years. It is essentially a Southern Chinese brunch of sorts, to put it in the simplest way. Dim sum is a place where you eat with your friends and family several dishes varying in ingredients, prices, and flavors and eat so much you don't need to refill your stomach until dinnertime. Dim Sum is not just chicken feet, hao gao, and siu mai, although those are typically their staple dishes, but people should be willing to keep an open mind beyond what they see in television and tourist traps. Royal Queen is located in Flushing; and is easily one of the biggest and roomiest dim sum places in New York City. They have a variety of dishes to offer and is a place you should go to with a large party. They are also one of the few places left in Flushing that still has decent dim sum.

Featured in the pictures is hao gao (steamed shrimp dumpling), steamed fish balls, and steamed roasted pork rice roll.

Their address is 136-20 Roosevelt Ave, Flushing, NY 11354. You should probably forget about parking, but if you have to, go early.

Lok Lok

Lok Lok is a great place to eat for lunch or dinner if you are in the mood for Cantonese cuisine. The place can get crowded and service will rush you if that happens, but the food is good and at a reasonable price. Featured is congee, basically rice porridge and a Chinese comfort food. Also featured is steamed rice rolls with mushrooms, fried radish cake, and dumpling lo mein. Congee is only available for breakfast and lunch, so don't expect to order it for dinner. Also, this place opens up really early, so if you need to fill yourself up for a grueling day, you can consider Lok Lok as one of your options. They have no website, but this is their address:

4296 Main St, Flushing, NY 11355

Nan Bei Ho

Nan Bei Ho has moved from Flushing to Bayside Hill and it has been a definite improvement. This style of cuisine is Northern China and I would recommend this place for breakfast on weekends but it does get crowded and the dishes are not exactly the healthiest in the world. If that does not bother you; I suggest soymilk, and no, not the ones you buy at the supermarket, there are two varities; sweet and salty. The picture features the salty which is thicker and has more toppings but the sweet is just as good. I also reommend the taro bun, radish bun, sticky rice. What's featured in the pictures is fried mei fun, salty soymilk, taro bun, and meat between sesame bread.

Homemade-Spaghetti, Salad, and Soup

Last night, my family and I decided to have a Western style dinner. We made fruit salad with apple, melon, and persimmon combined with just a touch of mayo as well as roasted pepper soup topped with basil and cheese crouton. Finally, our main dish was spaghetti with red sauce, made with minced meat and tomato and topped with parmesan cheese. The result: a satisfied stomach from a delicious family meal.

Buddha Bodai-Flushing

Buddha Bodai in Flushing is one of my most favorite resturants because not only does it serve good vegetarian Chinese food, but because it serves comfort vegetarian Chinese food. To those who think that Chinese vegetarian food involves only tofu and bak choy; you are very very wrong. It is much more than that. My family and I have been frequenting the Flushing location ever since it has opened, closed, and reopened again because the chef is consistent. The textures and tastes are almost like the real thing. It is healthy and a place worth trying. He alway tries new dishes and is happy to give away his recipes to his customers. The menu is completely vegetarian and this is just a small sample of what the resturant has to provide. The dishes featured are Sesame Seaweed Roll and Roasted Pork. There are two locations: Flushing and Chinatown but I only recommend the Flushing location. They are also available for Dim Sum in the morning. Unfortunately, there is no website because it is a very local place; but check it out when you have the chance.

Homemade-Twice Stuffed Baked Sweet Potato and Stuffed Portobello Mushroom

Today I made twice stuffed baked sweet potato and baked portobello mushroom. The potato were baked first, then I took the flesh out and mixed it with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, butter, and cream cheese. This tastes so much better and sweeter than just a regular baked sweet potato. Takes about 2 hours to make, but it doesn't take too much labor. I got the stuffed portobello mushroom recipe from my aunt. It's basically breadcrumbs, shrimp, and cheese. Washing the mushrooms are important but this only takes about half an hour to bake. Both dishes are delicious and a good alternative to meat.

Shanghai Cuisine 33

Argo's Tea

Shanghai cuisine is pretty easy to find in New York City nowadays. A few years back, Shanghai Cuisine 33 opened near my home so I'm becoming a regular customer. Shanghai flavors are stronger than Cantonese cuisine, it has spicier and sharper flavors while Cantonese is more subtle. What we have here is choy with golden mushrooms, dan dan noodles: a local dish that has a lovely blend of peanuts, chilis, and more. I also had wuxi spareribs which was practically falling off the bone, and for dessert a non chinese dish, which is a manhattan truffle, cherry in the middle covered with vanilla and chocolate ice cream enrobed by dark chocolate. Shanghai Cuisine 33 is very affordable and is a great place to bring your friends and family. They also have 2 locations in Chinatown and the food is pretty consistent throughout.

If you are not a coffee person like me, but you favorite choice of beverage is tea, then I would suggest going to Argo's Tea. They have a number of locations in New York City, and I have been the one near Madison Square Park and another nearby Washington Square Park as well. Argo's Tea offers a range of options that can be comforting in the winter or refreshing in the summer. I have tried the Red Velvet and love it, but there are plenty of others like Mint Chocolate, Pumpkin Chai for the autumn, and fruit teas. They even offer coffee and little snacks such as sandwiches and cakes to go with your tea. Their prices are about the same as Starbucks so if you're feeling tired with coffee, look for Argo's Tea.

Homemade - French Toast

Today, I decided to make French Toast, an easier alternative to pancakes. I used regular bread, but challah bread works the best. I also used honey and low fat milk for flavoring, but whole milk would make the custard thicker and easier for the bread to absorb. The most important bit is that I baked the french toast before and after frying, that would make it less wet in the center and would maintain that golden brown color. It takes a long time to make but it isn't that hard. You can set the custard the night before as well if you want to save some time. In this picture, I put powdered sugar on top, and if I had some fruits I would have decorated it as well. Jam, nutella, and dulce de leche are good toppings; but the best is the classic maple syrup.

Asian Gourmet

This week my sister and I went to Asian Gourmet at Flushing near the Booth Memorial Hospital for lunch. We always passed by the place, but never actually tried it, so we thought yesterday was a day as good as any. The place is small, so it is easily crowded, even at 2:30 which we went in for, but eventually by 3, everyone has petered out. We ordered the lunch special, each $7.50. My sister ordered grilled pork chops and I ordered eggplant. Honestly, the food was not worth the price and the menu was a bit expensive.

However, the drinks were really good. My sister order Dream of Peach at $4 and I ordered the taro smoothie at $3 and I know their bubble tea is $2.50. My taro smoothie actually tasted like taro, and not the powder kind and was very filling. The Dream of Peach was smooth and sweet, but not overly so. We saw a lot of people walk in to order drinks to go, which is what I am probably going to do if I have a hankering for bubble tea and nearby the area.
