Shanghai cuisine is pretty easy to find in New York City nowadays. A few years back, Shanghai Cuisine 33 opened near my home so I'm becoming a regular customer. Shanghai flavors are stronger than Cantonese cuisine, it has spicier and sharper flavors while Cantonese is more subtle. What we have here is choy with golden mushrooms, dan dan noodles: a local dish that has a lovely blend of peanuts, chilis, and more. I also had wuxi spareribs which was practically falling off the bone, and for dessert a non chinese dish, which is a manhattan truffle, cherry in the middle covered with vanilla and chocolate ice cream enrobed by dark chocolate. Shanghai Cuisine 33 is very affordable and is a great place to bring your friends and family. They also have 2 locations in Chinatown and the food is pretty consistent throughout.
