If you love Katsu, this is the place for you! For those of you who are not familiar with Katsu, simply put Katsu is either chicken or pork that is breaded with Japanese bread crumbs known as Panko. (This is just my definition/point of view of what Katsu is.)
I came here with a friend for lunch and shared the meal to try their chicken katsu and pork katsu. We ordered the chicken curry katsu lunch special set, which comes with rice, miso soup, and shredded cabbage (a.k.a. "salad"). For your information, I love Japanese curry; So, this is one of the best Japanese curry I have had in New York City. I like how Japanese curry has a sweetness to it, as I am a person with a major sweet tooth. This curry had the right amount of sweetness with small kick of spices with every bite; perfect balance of sweet and spicy! Some may find that the curry lacks in the spice department, but I prefer my food not to be overwhelming powerful in flavor. Both the chicken and pork katsus were very crispy and juicy. My friend and I tried the katsu sauce that was provided, but we preferred to dip our katsus in the curry. As for the sides, soup and salad, it was nothing special. However, we really loved the dressing for the cabbage. It was some sort of gingery, possibly peanut, dressing. My friend and I almost used up half the bottle; that's how good it was.
We went to Katsu-Hama on a weekday during their lunch special pricing around 1PM. It was not very crowded when we arrived. The service was standard. Price wise, we both paid about a little less than $20 each (tax and tip included).
